About Rochester Musical Theatre Academy

About

Become a true triple threat at Rochester Musical Theatre Academy!

Each registered performer will spend time studying dance, acting and vocal techniques in small (under 25 performers) group settings.  The focus is on giving you the skills you will need to nail your college and professional auditions and work as a performer.

This 8 week course is a process driven course ending in a showcase on November 4th.  The fall will be all about "getting back to basics" and will focus on musical theatre pre-1960 while the spring session will have a more contemporary curriculum.

In RMTA you will study:

Does your song make the cut? Before we rocked session lead by Sean Michael Flowers is a mix of vocal technique, audition masterclass, musical style coaching and audition repertoire treasure hunt, this class will take a deep dive into the repertoire of early musical comedy and the golden age eras of musical theatre and it's performance.  Whether your upcoming audition is for the next Broadway revival megahit, annual school musical or to satisfy your pre-1970 college prescreen requirement, this course will provide you with the tools needed to deliver.  Emphasizing legit singing and the birth of the Broadway belt.

Ensemble Singing at the Rochester Music Theatre Academy will focus on building the skills necessary to sing in an ensemble in a musical theatre setting. Students will develop their auditation and listening skills in order to build their solo singing into a cohesive ensemble sound, while continuing to develop their vocal technique and musicianship skills. Rehearsals will consist of physical, breath, and vocal warm-ups, discussion of individual and ensemble singing skills as they pertain to musical theatre, and rehearsal of assigned repertoire, to be performed at the end of the session. Brian White, an experienced conductor and music teacher, will lead the session.

Dance instruction, led by locally renowned choreographer Mandi Lynn Griffith, will always begin with one of her heart pumping warms up, but will also consist of technique classes (including ballet) and choreography with a focus on learning quickly and accurately to help you in all audition situations!

Actors Studio study at RMTA is designed to engage students in exploring what it means to create a character in an authentic and truthful way. Acting exercises, monologue work, and scene work revolve around developing the following skills: Listening, Observing, Reacting, and having a Point of View. Exploration of these attributes will result in the young Acting student having the tools and understanding necessary to build characters onstage who are vibrant, complex, honest, and authentically connected to the imaginary world they are inhabiting in the play or musical. At the end of the session, students will present monologues and scenes that they will have worked on. With over 25 years of experience as a Theatre Educator and Artist, Sandy Nagar is excited to share his knowledge and expertise with our students this year!
